Derivation of Health Based Human Biomonitoring Values for Pcb in Human Blood Samples

چکیده
Introduction Polychlorinated Biphenyls (PCBs) are persistent synthetic organochlorines. Due to their lipophilicity they accumulate in the food chain and in human lipid tissue and can cause a variety of dose-dependent adverse health effects in different tissues and organs. Although their prohibition in the early 1980ies led to a significant decrease of the body burden of the population, PCBs are still widespread due to their high persistency in the environment and may still be emitted, e. g. in case of improper recycling activities. Through Human Biomonitoring studies PCB concentrations in human blood have been measured since several decades to observe the body burden of these substances in the general population as well as in specifically exposed subgroups. Nevertheless until 2012 there was no approved health based guidance value in Germany, which would have allowed environmental health practitioners and epidemiologists to interpret PCB-Human Biomonitoring data according to its relevance for human health. Health based guidance values for Human Biomonitoring in Germany (HBM values) are regularly derived by the German “Human Biomonitoring Commission” according to the knowledge and judgment of its members and published by the Federal Environment Agency. Per definition of the HBM-Commission the HBM II value marks the “concentration in the body matrix of a substance above which relevant adverse health effects may occur, and hence immediate action to reduce exposure must be taken and expert care in environmental medicine will be required”, whereas the HBM I value represents the concentration "below which [...] no adverse health effect should be expected." 1

Intrinsic Human Elimination Half-Lives of Polychlorinated Biphenyls Derived from the Temporal Evolution of Cross-Sectional Biomonitoring Data from the United Kingdom
BACKGROUND Most empirical estimates of human elimination kinetics for persistent chemicals reflect apparent elimination half-lives that represent the aggregated effect of intrinsic elimination, ongoing exposure, and changes in body weight. However, estimates of intrinsic elimination at background levels are required for risk assessments for the general population. OBJECTIVE To estimate intrin...
متن کاملRevised and new reference values for some persistent organic pollutants (POPs) in blood for human biomonitoring in environmental medicine.
Reference values for environmental pollutants related to the German population are established continuously by the Human Biomonitoring Commission of the German Federal Environmental Agency. The revised and new reference values for organochlorine compounds in whole blood are derived from the German Environmental Survey 1998 (adults aged 18-69 years) and from a survey performed with children (age...
متن کاملPopulation Physiologically Based Pharmacokinetic Modeling for the Human Lactational Transfer of PCB-153 with Consideration of Worldwide Human Biomonitoring Results
BACKGROUND One of the most serious human health concerns related to environmental contamination with polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) is the presence of these chemicals in breast milk. OBJECTIVES We developed a physiologically based pharmacokinetic model of PCB-153 in women, and predict its transfer via lactation to infants. The model is the first human, population-scale lactational model for...
متن کاملSource Identification and Health Risk Assessment of Polychlorinated Biphenyls (PCBs) in Surface Soils from Vicinity of Arad-Kouh Processing and Disposal Complex, Tehran
Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) can adversely affect human and environmental health according to long-term half-life and persistence in the environment. Therefore, this study was conducted to detect, identify, and health risk assessment of PCBs in surface soils collected from the vicinity of Arad-Kouh processing and disposal complex, Tehran, in 2020. A total of 30 surface soil samples was coll...
متن کاملThe use of biomonitoring equivalents for interpreting blood concentrations in population studies: a case for polychlorinated biphenyls
A number of exposure guideline values for environmental contaminants are established by various agencies for risk assessment purposes. Biomonitoring equivalents are conversions of external guideline values to internal doses, against which biomonitoring data can be directly compared. Several biomonitoring equivalents have been developed for the interpretation of blood concentrations of environme...
